Tim Lincecum's five-game losing streak had Giant fans reaching for their bongs and wishing the Cy Young award-winning hurler could do the same. Then Lincecum, who was arrested for marijuana possession last October, went out and beat the Rockies 2-1 on Sept. 1.
After his first two sensational seasons (he won Cy Youngs both years for best National League pitcher), Lincecum hit a rough patch in August, losing all five games he started. San Francisco attorney Tony Serra contended that Lincecum had been suffering from "cannabis deprivation."
Fans created t-shirts urging the Giants to Let Tim Smoke and Let Timmy Smoke.
Of course, the Giants are bound by league rules that punish players for using marijuana and other illegal drugs. Still Serra may have had a point when he said about Lincecum, "His decline occurred after his marijuana conviction. He obviously has not 'medicated' since then. Baseball pitchers, like trial lawyers, have a 'high stress' vocation. Marijuana ably moderates stress. Really!"
